Play On: A Healthy Way to Cope with Loss

Suicide doesn’t discriminate. Losing half of your income after a loss to parental suicide can add stress to any household. In the aftermath, when considering a new budget, sports don’t always make the top of the list as a monetary priority. At Leiah’s Mark, we help offset some of the costs associated with sports, including camps, clinics, season fees, uniforms, and equipment.

Organized sports activities and exercise may not extinguish grief, but they can play a valuable role in helping people adapt to loss. Physical activity releases brain chemicals such as endorphins, which help to relieve discomfort and boost our mood. Although grief is not the same as depression, complicated grief, a form of bereavement that triggers strong emotional and physical reactions that can take years to work through, can lead to depression.
