Leiah’s Mark, Inc. (501c3) is a Non-Profit Organization Supporting Kids
Suicide doesn’t discriminate. Losing half of your income after a loss to parental suicide can add stress to any household. In the aftermath, when considering a new budget, sports don’t always make the top of the list as a monetary priority. At Leiah’s Mark, Inc (501c3), we aim to help offset some of the costs associated with sports, including camps, clinics, season fees, uniforms, and equipment.
Organized sports activities and exercise may not extinguish grief, but they can play a valuable role in helping people adapt to loss. Physical activity releases brain chemicals such as endorphins, which help to relieve discomfort and boost our mood. Although grief is not the same as depression, complicated grief, a form of bereavement that triggers strong emotional and physical reactions that can take years to work through, can lead to depression.
A 2017 study by Black Dog Institute found regular exercise of any intensity can help prevent depression—and just one hour a week can help. Losing a loved one is emotionally draining, and grief can take away energy and focus. Engaging in exercise can help clear the mind and bring a feeling of calmness. It can also motivate people to do other things to get back into society and reintegrate them into life.
For child survivors of parental suicide, sports can be an important outlet to cope with the trauma of such a tremendous loss. Leiah’s Mark, Inc. (501c3) aims to relieve some of the financial burdens associated with the costs of sports after the loss of a parent to suicide.
